 On a dark desert highway  cool wind in my hair

 캄캄한 사막의 고속도로위에서 내 머리결에 바람이 서늘하고    

 

The warm smell of colitas  rising up through the air

그 텁텁한 코리타스 냄새가 대기 위로 피어 올랐었지 

 

 

 

Up ahead in a distance  I saw a shimmening light

     저~ 멀리 앞쪽 먼곳에는 가물거리는 불빛이 보였었지     

 

 My head grew heavy and my side grew dim  I had to stop for the night

내 머리는 갈수록 무거워 졌고 옆은 갈수록 어두침침해져서 하룻밤 쉬어가야 했었지

 

 

 

There she stood in the doorway  I heard the mission bell

       그녀가 문가에 서 있었는데  난 접대를 알려주는 벨소리를 들었었지      

 

And I was thinking to myself  this could be heaven or this could be hell

그리고 난 내 자신이 여기가 천국인지 아니면 여기가 지옥인지 생각하고 있었지 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then she lit up a candle  and she showed me the way

      그러더니 그녀가 촛불을 밝혀 들고 나에게 길을 안내해 줬었지      

 

 There were voices down the corridor   I thought I heard them say

복도 아래 쪽에서 소리가 들려왔었는데 그들이 이렇게 말하는듯 들렸었어

캘리포니아호텔에 잘 오셨습니다 이렇게 사랑서러운 곳에 이렇게 사랑스러운 풍경에

그녀는 값진 티파니를 휘감는데 관심 두었고 그녀는 벤츠를 몰았었지

 

She's got a lotta pretty, pretty boys  she calls friends

그녀는 많은 잘생긴 남자들도 알았었고 그녀는 친구라고 불렀지 

   

 

 

 

How they dance in the courtyard  sweet summer sweat

     그들은 마당에서 얼마나 춤을 췄던지 달콤한 여름 땀에 흠뻑 젖었었지        

 

Some dance to remember some dance to forget

어떤 춤은 기억할 만했고 어떤 춤은 잊어버렸지

그래서 난 지배인을 불러서  내가 마실 포도주를 달랬지

 

He said "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969"

그는 "우리는 1969년 이후로 그런 독한술은 없어요"라고 했지

 

 

 

 

And still those voices they're calling from far away

그리고 아직도 그들의 그 소리가 멀리서 들려오는 것 같아

 

Wake you up in the middle of the night  just to hear them say

깊은 밤 그들의 그 들려오는 말소리에 당신의 잠을 깨우기도 하지

그들은 그 캘리포니아호텔에서의 삶을 즐기지, 얼마나 멋진 환희인가-  핑계대고 와요

 

Mirrors on the ceilling, the pink champaign on ice

천정에 펼쳐진 거울들, 얼음 위에 얹혀있는 핑크빛 샴페인

 

 

 

 

And she said "We are all just prisoners here of our own device"

그리고 그녀가 "우리는 모두 우리 자신들의 도구로 여기의 포로들이죠"랬지

 

In the masters chambers they're gathered for the feast

귀빈들이 주빈실에서 그들의 만찬을 위하여  모여들었지

 

  

 

 

They stab it with their steely knifes    but they just can't kill the beast

그들은 그들의 철재 나이프로 음식을 자르지만, 그들은 짐승을 죽이진 못하지

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Last thing I remember, I was running for the door

마지막으로 내가 기억하는건 내가 문으로 뛰어갔던거야

 

I had to find the passage back to the place I was before

난 내가 전에 있던 그 곳으로 돌아가기위해 길을 찾아야만 했었지

 

 

 

 

"Relax"       said the night man

"진정하세요" 라고하며  그 야간 경비원이 말하더군 

 

"We're all programmed to receive  you can check out everytime you like, but you can never leave"

"우린 모두 손님을 받도록 프로그램 되어있어요, 당신이 좋다면 언제든지 방을 뺄수는 있지만 떠나지는 못 할걸요"
